Annalaya – A dream for non vegetarians. 

Nothing beats South Indian food, Especially South Indian non vegetarian food. The aroma of Mutton kolumbu wafting from the kitchen makes my day.

Annalaya opened in Chennai a year back catering only to vegetarian masses. In Feb of 2017, they expanded their menu adding non vegetarian to it, which was like a silent call to me! 

During a boring day at work me and colleague decided to hit the place for lunch. Located in Nungambakkam on the Jaganathan street, the place is hard to miss. It sits bang next to the Vijay TV office.

One look at the menu and I knew what I was trying. The mannar kari virundhu saapadu. Virundhu translates to feast in Tamil and a feast was what it was.. 

While my friend wanted to try only ur starters(I dunno how we are still friends), we ordered a virundhu for me and nattu kozhi Fry and vanjiram Fry for her.

Coming to the feast. The mannar virundhu consists of everything that walks, flies, swims, crawls and lives, just the way I like it. 

Pssst, If you are still reading this and are a vegetarian, please stop. Don’t tell me I did not warn you.



Starting with a tall glass of cooling nannari sharbet the feasting began. The mannar kari virundhu saapadu consists of 28+ items. 

Chicken soup, chicken chettinadu, malli chicken, Mutton chops, Mutton liver Fry, Mutton chukka, boiled egg, nethili Fry, fish fry, prawn thokku, kadai kolambu, nattu kozhi kolambu, Mutton varatha Curry, chicken/Mutton biryani, parotta, chicken curry, Mutton Curry, fish curry, raita, curd, white rice, Rasam, butter milk, dessert and ice cream.. (I may have missed a name or two, but heck, the list is still impressive) 

The curries were cooked to perfection. The fried items and chukka items were lip smackingly delicious. The fish fry, made using pomfret, was brilliant and my personal favorite. The liver was to die for. The prawn, the biryani, nethili fry, the mutton chops, everything was just plain perfect. 

Priced at 700, the meal is perfect for you if you have that kind of appetite that I possess. The rice, parotta, gravies, curd, butter milk and a few other items are unlimited.
There service was impeccable and quick. The ambiance, very simple and comfortable.

While I may not order the mannar virundhu every time I go, they also have some interesting varieties of lunch virundu, priced between 249499/- I’m definitely​ heading back for these.

In addition to the regular seating area, they also have private dining area on the first floor, which can also be used for office purpose on daily rentals. Very interesting.
A meal for two can come up to 1000+, given the ambience, service, food and the whole package, it’s totally worth it.
